I’m working on a Dan Craft FT 10’ for 5wt. The blank is factory spined and the marks are on each section on the stiff point of the blank. But rotating the blank there is another stiff point just 180 degree on the opposite side. When I roll the blank it stays put on two points as well 90 degree to the stiff and factory marked points. So my blank has two stiff and two soft sides.
When the factory marked (stiff) point is on the blanks lower side the natural bend of the rod is slightly up ... and the Dan Craft logo is right in place. Where do you think should I locate the guides? My feel is on the factory marked side casting forward and backwards against stiff (but less stable?) sides of the blank. Can I get problems with accuracy? I build the rod as a switch rod and will use it most for streamer fishing. Has anybody build this rod and has a guide placement chart to start with? Thanx! The rod will be equally stable (or unstable) in all planes. Guide position determines stability, not spine orientation. Take a look at the FAQs page and the comments on spine there and see if they help you.
Dan should have some general guide placement locations that may help you. ...................... Re: Help: Need assistence locating guides on a fly rod

Hi Stefan! Drop me an email and I'll attach some suggested spacing from Dan...but I still highly recommend going with the static guide placment process as outlined in the article in the library here on that topic. Also, note that you can very often get away with fewer guides than you'd expect on Dan's 10' FT's...often only 9. In fact, Bob Meiser often builds them with only 8! Do a static test and see where you end up.
