I need some help. Ive got a rod tip epoxyed on a offshore rod that i need to get off. Ive tried to heat it up but that didn't work. I hope I didn't mess the tip up? Anybody have any ideas? should I just cut it off and start over?

Thanks
Lee

You need to apply heat and torque at the same time. This can be a bit of a challenge if you are working by yourself and you don't have a rod lathe.

Find a way to hold the rod securely so that you can twist the tip without having the rod turn. Get a grip on the tip-top with needle-nose pliers and apply as much torque as you are comfortable with (varies with the size of the blank...just don't twist the tip off). Apply heat to the tip-top. You may want to cover the area immediately below the tip-top so you are not flaming the rod itself.

Keep your heat source moving and keep the twist pressure on. As soon as the tip-top starts to move, continue to twist while you slip the top off. Clean the tip area immediately and you can get most of the epoxy off. Scotchbrite the rest off.

Good luck.

here's a thought,
Ty some thing metal onto the tip top.
Then a strong rubber band to that. So the heat does not burn the rubber.
The band to some thing solid, so it does not pop off.
Pull the rod back put heat on the tip, maybe a candle

Stay out of the way of flying objects.

Grind it off and avoid any risk of damage to the blank from excessive heat. Not worth damaging a blank trying to save a $5 - $10 tip top.

You can always grind it off , try the heat first . I dont know any glue that will not melt, If you ruin the tip then you can cut it off.

Keep the heat to a minimum - do not twist at all if on fiberglass - split the thing with a dremel and pry open to remove. If working on the butt cap on the other end keep clear if you heat - shot one through a wall panel in shop! Be careful and the best above post to keep blank and trash the tip is good advice on some of the pesky tip tips.

The rubber band trick works pretty good, especially if you used 5 min epoxy
