I am considering puting a slide band reel seat on a 9', 5wt. rod. I like the feel and lower weight. A slide band seems secure on my three weight. What does anyone else think of this idea?

Check this out, Al. A quick use of the search would probably provide some past discussions, too. This link is just below a ways on this first page. Putter Williston, ND Re: SLide band reel seat

Al,
I like the light weight of the slide band seats with cork inserts. I think the cork and ring style is very secure but IMO the wood inserts are not and in my experience the wood tends to get very scratched from the slide bands digging in when the attempt is made to hold the reel on more securely. Al--ditto Dan re cork vs. wood. No reason you couldn't do it on a 5wt, but if you're consistently pursuing bigger fish with it (i.e. 4lbs +) I might be a little slower to do so. I have to admit I haven't broken from tradition much on this one--I often use cork/ring seats on 1-3wts and occasionally 4's, but 4wt's always been "the line" for me. I'm sure you'll get a few more perspectives tomorrow! :) Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
