Hello there, Novice rod builder here , three rods total. I have been using Permagloss for guide wraps as these were light spinning and casting rods. Now I have built a 7' heavy spinning rod for use with a Penn 950 SS series reel. The first guide is a number 50 ring so I have underwrapped the guides plus I did a diamond butt wrap also. I mixed up three batches of Flex Coat Hi Build to practice with, one batch straight up and one batch with thinner added as per the Clemmons book and one batch that heat was applied to. After using the Permagloss I was astonished to see all the bubbles in the Flex Coat. My question is before I ruin all my wraps has anybody used Permagloss on large guide wraps and also a diamond wrap and the method used? Thanks again guys. P.S. Just go ahead and call me a chicken about the hi build epoxy! Jerry Springs Re: Permagloss on butt wrap?

I have. It will work, but takes many, many coats to build up any depth on large wraps made with heavy thread. Luckily, you can apply additional coats just an hour or two apart so it can still be done in a day or two. But Permagloss, once applied to any real depth, looks different than epoxy. It's not a glass-like coating. It's more of an eggshell clear type of look. Some like it, some don't. Sort of like a satin versus a high gloss finish.

Jerry, Tom is correct. However, I think that you would like the look and ease of U-40 LS Supreme on those heavy wraps. I personally would use two or three coats of LS Supreme light build instead of the thicker version. LS Supreme gives me much better results than Flex-Coat. FYI, I love the results three to six coats of Perma-Gloss on fly and ultra-light and light spinning rods. Ralph If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.
