Raw stock? I use a Stanley SurForm file to rough it down then 60 to 80 grit drywall sanding screen to get the shape I want. 150 and 220 screen finishes off the process.
You are better off turning at slower speeds with more power, than turning at high speeds. Higher speeds create heat which most EVA doesn't like. You will permanently soften the EVA if you get it too hot. This is why wood lathes with 3/4HP and up motors are better than most specialty rod building lathes and machines for EVA amd Hypalon turning. ............... Re: EVA Grip Forming

Any of the midi type lathes from Delta, Jet, General or Frisch - they're all about the same and most are under $300. The Grizzly hobby lathe, powered by a hand drill, isn't shabby at all, but is better suited to cork than EVA.

Check out the Jet Mini Lathe at Amazon.com as they don't charge for shipping. Occasionally they offer discounts of $25.00 and there are further discounts for other tools when you purchase the lathe. It is a very good lathe for rodbuilding work. Re: EVA Grip Forming
