Echo fly reel...Anybody use 'em?

I had a composite reel at one time...not a bad piece of equipment. The Cabela's catalogue has the Echo fly reels.....Any opinion on these guys?

Keith,

I don't own one but I know some people here in Oregon that really like them and the price is great. Check out the link below for some comments.

Hi Keith,

I have one and really like it. Light weight, very durable and a decent drag. Balances well on my 3wt. and 5wt. The only small gripe I have is that changing spools requires you to line up a small slot on the spool which isn't so easy to see sometimes, but that's a minor thing. Hard to beat for the money, IMHO.

A similar reel was available a couple of years ago that didn't have the drag system of the Echo - I believe it was called the Danreel or Comp'O Reel. Anyone know if these are still being produced?

Kevin

That's the one I had, Kevin. The Comp'O. I quite liked it. Not much of a drag system.

Thanks Bob...I'll check it out. I was looking at the larger one...the 6-9 wt.

These seem to be only two opinions about the Echo, love or hate. I posted a question on FAOL about using one and was amazed at the reaction. Most people there said the spools warp. I don't know if that's true or not, but I wasn't willing to take a chance. I needed a large capacity reel for occasional saltwater use so I bought a cast aluminum one instead, heavier than the Echo but also less than $50. I should not mentioned that on FAOL since I got flamed for such heresy.
