I've built a good many rods, but this is my first bamboo fly rod from the blank up. It's hexagonal, not round. How does this affect reaming the grip & reelseat insert/arbors. You Bamboo fly rod experts out there, talk to me. I want to be as near perfect ( I know, perfection is not possible) as I can be. Ralph If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again. i have built a couple and you need to take your measurements accross the flats and ream to that measurement for your first trial fit. you want it to slide on but be tight. i am assuming you have built the handle off the rod. attaching the reel seat is the same as a round rod. once that is attached you can slide the handle down to the reel set. the spaces between the flats and the peaks will hold glue well. The above mentioned is one way, (the one I use) the other is to machine the area round on your lathe. Many of the old manufacturers did just that. Doesn't harm the fibers as you are really just knocking down the points.. you still have a mass of power fibers on the flats.. And if that whole power fiber thing bothers you, just think about the ferrule station, which is probably the most stressed area of the rod, it is turned down pretty good just to get the ferrule on. And remember, if you do not turn it down, you may have little areas that are not filled in, I use toothpicks to fill these areas , and of course, you get to cover all this up with your winding check.
Hope this helps ya. Tight lines, Art mrparramoure@yahoo.com Re: Bamboo fly grip help
