glueing cork rings

I have some good quality cork rings and want to glue them together with a waterresistent wood glue. The rings have a very flat surface. Is it necessary to roughen the glue surfaces before glueing them together?

Titebond III or Rod Bond are waterproof. Titebond II is water resistant. You don't need to sand the surfaces prior to glueing, just make sure they're clamped together really tight. Some of the glue should ooze out of the seams when you clamp it all together.

Stefan:

Gerry's comments are good. Here is how I take his actions one step further.
1) I take 400 wet or dry paper and use it wet to give both sides of each cork a couple of licks to assure they are flat.
2) The mandrel is coated with beeswax (you can use parafin, too) to protect it from the low pH of the Titebond III.
3) Clamp until all the surfaces mate fully and then wipe off the excess.
I have had sucess with no glue lines with this method.
