I am interested in making a graphite / flexible gaff with foam handles and a custom design. Has anyone ever made one? Which blank do I use? I would need it to be pretty sturdy. Probably 4 - 6 feet. Re: Gaff question ?

Hi Mark,
I use a Gatorglass T80H which is a 8' blank cut 1 foot from the tip. Regards, Rick Re: Gaff question ?

how do you attach the gaff head to the shaft? Re: Gaff question ?

The gaff hook that I use has a "tang" on the end. I use my rotary tool to cut that off so that the hook will just fit into the end of the blank with a little play. I then make upward cuts all around the gaff hook to give the hook more "grip" in the epoxy. I use a thick slow cure epoxy similar to Rodbond. It is important to put epoxy up into the shaft before inserting the hook. After the epoxy has cured I pour several ounces of liquid epoxy into the other end of the shaft and let it run down to the end. My idea in doing this is to fill any voids around the hook and give the assembly more strength.

I don't think a 'gaff' blank is what he's looking for. To obtain a light & flexible gaff you need to use a rod blank as already suggested. I like small gaffs made this way only I would use a fiberglass blank instead of graphite...but then again, that's just me. Best of luck...it'll work great!
