Hi,
I've got an 11 foot 5 weight blank which I'm planning to turn into a 1½ hands fly rod. I've found out the guides to use (AMTAK Titans + a Fuji Titanium tip top), the reelseat is easy but the handle is giving me some trouble - how long should the front and rear handles be ? Any other "features" you would build into a rod like this ? Thanks Peter Re: 5 weight 1½ hands rod - your advice please

R.B. Meiser uses a 10 1/2" foregrip and 3 1/2 to 3 3/4" rear grip that you can see in his picture gallery on his site. The search engine could find more posts on this for you. Putting in "switch rod" would probably get you there. Re: 5 weight 1½ hands rod - your advice please

Peter,
I'm building a rod like you do on a 10ft Dan Craft FT blank. The upper grip will be around 26 cm (10.5'') and the lower grip around 9cm (3.5''). I have a 10'6'' 9/10wt Bob Meiser Switch rod. The grip lengths on this rod are similar and it's perfect for underhand casting both hands on the rod. On Bob Meisers website (look for his website on the left side) you find a few pics of switch rod grips in the "gallery" (the shorter grips on the bottom) and in "Articles and Anglers". I wouldn't build the grips much shorter as mentioned above as I think that your hands will be to close together for proper double handed casting. Stefan Re: 5 weight 1½ hands rod - your advice please

Thanks guys - I'll go with your recommendations and have a look at Meiser's rods too. Re: 5 weight 1½ hands rod - your advice please

I would go longer than that. You lose virtually nothing by having longer grips, as you can always choke up no matter what the configuration. If you want to cast a long belly line, the wider grip can be helpful Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
