dull spots from moving guides

I am about to start a project on a browning casting style rod 8'6" long. The company only put six guides on it and the bend of the rod allows the line to go past the blank to the underside. After working with some tape and some new guides i have a new guide spacing that I want to use but I have one problem before I start cutting guides off. The original guides will have a dull spot under them and only one of the originals line up with the new spacing. How can I get rid of this dull spot on the blank? Is there a product on the market to refinish these spots that will look good on the finished product or do I have to refinish the entire rod?
