Get the next size up. If you try to resize the tip of the the blank you will void the warrenty.

This is very common; a blank listed as size "X" tip top. These things vary quite a bit in actuallity. Having a sponsor send the correct sized tip top with the blank is the only way to be sure with ordering only one tip top or not stocking a complete set of tip tops in the shop.
As an example, I've built many rods (over 100) from a certain blank listed as 4.0 tip top and have had very few of them actually fit to this size. Most were 4.5 and some were even 5.0.

i've decided to begin the practice of ordering extra tip tops, one over and one under the "suggested" size. i've also decided to order 2-3 stripper guides too, with each order, in the thought of slowly builing up a stock of "extra" pieces. doesn't help you now, but for the future.. this is your first fly rod? not your first rod though i see... there will be more! :-)

One thing to remember about tip tops. If the shop you order the top from tries it on the same blank which has no finish ( ex: matte finish), then the tip top will be 1/2 to one size smaller. It must be fitted to the same rod blank with the same finish.

When I order from Hook and Hackle Bob always sizes the tip top to the blank. He also staples the tip top bag to the blank bag. There have been a few blanks that I've ordered that Bob ended up sending a different sized tip top than I ordered because it was the right one for the blank.
