What was this blank designed for?

I was going through the stuff in my basement today trying to make room and came across a rod that I threw together in the late 70's for Sturgeon fishing. I caught a few big ones on this, real big--one fish was only a centimetre or two of under two metres long. I can''t believe now that I killed fish that size, but I was younger and didn't have the sense God gave a dog.

Anyway, back to my point, when I say threw together I mean just that. This is a one piece thirteen or fouteen foot rod--it's a Fenwick su 1388 or 89 I covered up one of the numbers with a guide wrap. Does anyone have any idea what this blank was designed for? When I built the rod I used cork tape for the handle, but it kept working loose so I ended up epoxying it on. Is there anyway that I could remove this or should i just leave it be? Would it be possible to find suitable material to make ferrules so that I can make it a three or four piece.

I think it's designed for the Olympics, 1 of 2 events:

The Pole Vault

The Javelin

I've seen a few of these for snagging paddlefish; local "sport". Haven't been around that for many years, now, but there's still a few who ask me to build them for them. I haven't made one yet, though. Snagging requires a heavy blank, very powerful.

I saw an outdoors program on TV just this past week where they were 'fishing' for paddlefish. As Putter said, it's a 'snag' fishery. They were using long, heavy spinning rods with huge 8/0 treble hooks. It looked, um...well...very....uh....."sporting".

Jay, I had no idea practices like that were legal. This is a very powerful blank. As I said earler I used it on very large sturgeon, some of them around three or fout hundred pounds. I've no idea what I will use it for now--I no longer fish sturgeop.

Montana and North Dakota have a spring season for "snagging" paddlefish. These are a very old specie of fish with a large, pronounced "bill". They don't take a bait, they feed on microscopic particles in the water. They grow to well over 100#, their 'roe' (or eggs) are used for caviar and are collected for that use after harvest. The money from this is used to fund many projects in the area for fishing and recreation.

I don't participate in the "sport" but many, of course, do.
