Stripper guide question...

Rod Builders,

I've got a Fuji SIC TNSG 12 stripper guide to mount on my 8'6" DC FT863-4 3wt fly rod...

It looks like it will land on the second piece up from the butt section and I'm considering sawing off the front foot to reduce wraps and basically streamline the rod.

Has anyone tried this?

Barring any extraordinary abuse will a single footed no. 12 stay put.

thanks for any feed back.

marc

I have used them with a lot of success. If it were me, I would build nearly all my rods with SF strippers.

I haven't turned a two foot guide into a one foot guide, but I do agree with Scott. On any rod under an 8 or 9 wt., there's really no need for double foot strippers. The only good reason to use them is if the rod will be in a rod locker or up on a boat deck constantly. In those instances, the double-foot guides are less likely to get bent WAY out of shape, if stepped on, or hung on the edge of the rod locker.

In fact, I've gone to high-frame single foot spinning guides for most of my strippers. The height provides a straighter path from reel to guides, thereby reducing the line angle coming into the strippers. This usually translates into greater casting distance.

If you want to prove it to yourself, take a single foot concept guide--say an alconite--wrap it on a scrap piece of blank, then try to destroy it. Those things are so incredibly well-built that they're almost impossible to damage during typical fishing.

Agree with above. Use a single foot high frame. I got in some extra #12 Titans just for this purpose.

My personal favorite would have to be:
