I'm in the process of building my 2nd rod. It a BS706 7' with a 10" split grip handle. I was going to use 9 guides plus tip. The first rod was a 6' 6" BS706. For guide spacing on the first I just used the same spacing on a similar custom rod I had someone build for me last year. The spacing they used.....from the tip was, tip to 1st guide 5" then 5 1/2", then 6' for the rest. They are spiral wrapped rods. Including this method, that makes 3 different ways to do the spacing. Which is best.....is it just a preference? Is there a preferred distance between the butt guide and the reel because that distance would obviously change with each method as well?

Don,
There are many ways to determine the number and position of the guides all of which have advantages and disadvantages but if I were you I would look at the description of the Static Method in the LIBRARY above. As far as the first guide is concerned that will depend on a number of variables, the size of the reel, the rods action, the size and height of the guides etc. If I were you I would try to position the first guide so as to create as straight a line path as possible from the reel to the tip of the rod even if that means using a somewhat larger or higher framed guide as the first guide. I would also test cast the rod and while casting it look for a standing wave in the line between the reel and the first guide. This standing wave means that you are losing casting distance. The standing wave can not always be eliminated but I would try to reduce it as much as possible without getting the first guide too far up the rod. On the blank that you are building I would start of with the first guide at about 24" and go from there. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
