Question about rebuilding a rod

Well, leave it to me to forget to read the forum rules the one time it actually matters, I appologize. I got a little excited seeing such a cool forum.

Anyhow, as I said, I have aquired a broken G Loomis spinning rod, originally 6' and now about 5'9''. The power is now more of a medium heavy, so I was thinking about rebuilding it into a casting rod. I want to know how to go about removing the handle and reel seat, and is there a certain way to cleanly remove the guides and thread? I have a little experience in rod building, but none in un-building. Thanks for the help.

Check the FAQs page for tips on removing the guides/thread.

It's going to be a little hard to remove the handle if you plan to reuse it. If not, then you can spiral cut the seat and pop it off. Do be very careful about cutting into or harming the rod blank underneath.

Cork grips can be cut, filed, rasped off. EVA foam grips can be sliced off, end to end. Again, be very careful not to damage the underlying blank. Also be careful not to injure yourself when cutting, rasping, etc. Wear eye protection and don't get in a hurry.

If you'll do a search here in the archives for things like "removing reel seat" you should be able to turn up more specific information.

If that broken G Loomis is one of there better rods, such as an IMX or GLX, it's definitely worthy of the extra work that you're planning on putting into it. Another plan, if it's an IMX, might be to contact G Loomis and see about their warranty program. For $50 and no questions asked, they'd maybe replace it with an IMX blank of your choice?? The GLX blanks aren't available, though, so that's not possible, but a new rod would be?

It's a lot of extra work re-doing an old rod and unless the blank is a real high end, expensive one... you might think over that it might not really be worth all of that work compared to just buying a blank and building it up from scratch, Brandon.

Thanks for the advice. It's a GLX blank, otherwise I probably wouldn't bother :). I'll be sure to check out the FAQs page and the archives, thanks.

Also if you do redo it, you can extend the blank and possibly get a little softer action out of it?
If you can CC it you can find out what you have with a certain extension
