Techical fishing rod question
Posted by: MEL FREIRE (---.genericrev.cantv.net)

Dear friends,

I have an old fishing rod and I am trying to rebuild it. It is a big off-shore big game fishing rod for trolling.

This is my first time repairing a fishing rod and I am not used to technical terms.

I want to buy a roller top but after looking on many rod asccesories catalogs, all sizes come depending on "PIPE SIZE" I do not know the meaning of “PIPE SIZE” number

My fishing rod has a tip diameter of around 5 mm ( 0.20”) but I do not know to which pipe size belongs.

I would appreciate some advice according to your experience of what PIPE SIZE # , I should buy.

Best regards,

Mel Freire

Mel,
It's not pipe size, it's tube size. Measured in 1/64th of an inch. For instance a number 5 tube is 5/64".

Mel,
Looking at my drill to decimal chart, looks like a #13 tube tip (13/64") is what you'll need.

TUBE SIZE = PIPE SIZE :
Measured in the United States as "N" 64ths of an INCH (English system)
Some of the Manufacturers & Catalogs around the rest of the world outside the U.S.A. will report a rod blank's tip size in MILLIMETERS, or the rod's tube-pipe size of the tip-top guide in MILLIMETERS, instead of the English "size" of 64ths of an INCH. Check your data source to confirm the UNITS used (MM or 64ths").
The actual size of the blank's rod tip may be somewhat smaller or larger than the size reported in the Catalog or Manufacturer's website. Plan accordingly. The tube size of the tip-top will be very precisely what is reported / expected.

The CONVERSION from ENGLISH System to METRIC System:
25.400 millimeters (MM) = 1.000 inches This is an exact conversion.

To convert MM to __64ths of an Inch:
5.0MM / (25.4000 MM / INCH) x 64ths = 12.60 ==> 13.0 / 64ths .
