REC Recoil Guide foot length

I am about to start on a fly rod that I use REC recoils on. I am surprised at how long the feet are. They are lighter than regular single foots but I will obviously need more thread and finish. Anyone ever evaluated what the real weight savings come out to? If you add enough thread and finish, you would obviously get to the point where they would weigh the same.
Anyone ever shorten these feet by filing them back? How far? I am planning on asking REC but would appreciate any opinions on this. Thanks, Jim F. Re: REC Recoil Guide foot length

i found them to be a little on the long side for my taste and have cut them back with a pair of dykes. the problem you will have is that the feet won't have a flat bottom and they will be hard to set upright on your rod. what i would suggest is that you leave them alone and start your wrap a couple of turns from the foot. i am not sure if you can re flatten them but i think it would be difficult. I like the longer foot. On the smaller tip section the longer foot blends into the blank better than the shorter Pac Bays. The shorter guide creates a football shape. As far as weight, I happened to cut off the Klass Kote coating and 00 silk thread from a stripping guide to substitute another guide. The weight was 1.4 grains or .09 grams for the thread and finish.
