Hi again everyone.I just got my guides placed & finished my underwraps.This is my first rod so I'm still full of questions.My question is do I have to put a coat of flexcoat over my underwrap before wrap on the guide.I used size A NCP for the underwrap & am using Size C NCP for the overwrap.I did a search & see there a differing opinions.So my questions is will finishing the underwrap & the overwrap
at the same time cause any problems with the rod this is a surf rod by the way.Thanks agin mike

Putting a coating of finish on the underwraps just lock the wraps so they do not seperate when you are wrapping the over wrap. I always coat my under wraps but alot of people don't or they use CP to lock the under wrap. It's your choice, but I would recommend it where this is your first rod. Being new thread tension is a little tricky to get a handle on and it may save you some headackes with the over wrap.

I do my guide wraps like all the time. Save a bunch of time and apply the finish all at one time - but in two thin coats spaced 24 hrs apart. Do not block the tunnels formed on either side of the guide foot on the initial coat, let the finish wick into the thread and push out any air on either side of tunnel. If you block tunnel with a blob of finish air will have trouble expelling. Do not go excessive on the finish, just enough to wet the wraps on first sealing coat. Then let the rod rest guides down for 10 min, then turn rod guides up and gently flame the finish on all sides to burst any bubbles . Let the rod rest guides up for 15-20 min, then inspect the underside of the wraps for any excess finish that may have collected and brush it off. Gently flame the finish once again if needed. Turn rod guides down and let cure 24 hours before 2nd coat. Done many many rods this way with no problems.

I would take the time and coat the under wrap to make sure to get good penitration. You could use permagloss, it dries faster.

I also like Permagloss for this application.

As it is a Surf rod and will have to deal with a great deal of Torque and Stress I would brush coat the under wraps then remove most all to just seal the under wraps to the blank.
just a Little more protection for the blank
