Painting advice

I have a raw fiberglass blank and would like to paint it glossy black. Should I prime it first? What is the best type of primer/paint to use? I have an airbrush, so that is an option. Does it matter if the paint is matte or glossy, since it will be clearcoated eventually? Do I need to clearcoat the paint before whipping? If so, can I use my airbrush for that too?

Thanks.

Check the article on refinishing rod blanks in the online library here. I would probably use Permagloss and tint it black. Soak the corner of a cheap foam brush in the mixture, then poke the tip of the blank through the foam and draw the foam brush down over the blank in one continuous motion. Wait an hour or so, and do it once more. That should take care of it and give you an almost flawless finish.

Painted a few blanks with Fussion gloss black spray paint , blanks look great and seem to hold up fairly well. about 4 bucks per can in your local hardware store.

I've also painted a few pld blanks here recently. I used spay adhesion promoter I got at the auto parts store, then painted worked great. I haven'ttried permagloss yet.
