Inlaid feathers

Guys, I have just searched and read everything I could find on the inlaid feather process. Looks like the expert on this is "Fuzz" (I sure wish I could have made the Charlotte show!)

I don't have CP on hand and was planing to try laying down pheasant feathers with flex coat finish under and over the feather directly. Is this just looking for trouble?

Would the finish ruing the feathers? I thought I would check with opinions on using finish before trying it.

I have a few pieces of "test" blank material that I have saved from old broken rods. I have found this is a great way to try something that I am not sure of before doing it on a rod I have already invested hours in.

Thanks for any input.

Have you read the Russ Gooding article in RodMaker? This is probably the definitive work yet done.

Without the use of CP, some feathers will turn transparent, or very dark, under the epoxy finish.

Tom:

Which issue was this article in? I haven't seen one yet, but I have only received a couple issues as I just subscribed late last fall. I would like to get the back issue that has that article.

I Must say that your book and Rod Maker are my best educational investments so far, (this site excluded of course! : )

Thanks

I use Emers wood glue as my CP. Add just several drops of water to a two cc of it.. Sets quick
Works just as a CP will hold the feather color

My practice inlays on blank sections, and two fly rod inlays were done with polyurethane to hold my feathers in place. My epoxy coats went right over the polyurethane.
