American Tackle fly tip tops in a larger ring size

I remember a while back having a discussion here about the AT holo ring fly guides and how much I(and many others) loved them, but that the AT line of guides were in need of an available tip top with a larger ring size so that these great guides could be used for heavy rods without having to resort to using a braced spinning rod tip top.

The current fly tip tops only go up to a size 6 ring even though the single foot fly guides are available in larger sizes and if one was using 7's or 8's for running guides for a 7-12wt rod or so,you would obviously want to have at least a size 7 or 8 ring tip top,and not go back down to a 6.

As it is,in order to get anything with a ring larger than a size 6,the only option is to use a spinning rod tip top, which most do(I had to on my 7wt SIG V,but have been hoping to be able to replace it with a fly top soon).I'm sure some even prefer the sturdier spinning rod tops over the fly tip tops, but for many of us(I know I'm not the only one who commented in the past on how nice it would be to have a larger ring option in the fly top),the well braced spinning rod top just spoils the look of a fly rod.Not that it doesn't work fine though.

Anyways,I have been happily using my 7wt SIG V with holo guides(size 7 running guides and a size 8 spinning rod tip top) on it,but I am still looking forward to the day I can swap the tip top with a size 7 or 8 ring fly tip,LOL.

I remember Joe Meehan mentioning that they were going to make a larger tip top(at least a size 8 ring available),but that was quite a while ago and I haven't heard anything about it since(no one has posted about them here that I have read, which surprises me).Does anyone know if the plan to bring one of these to production is still in the works?

Hi Tony,

More SKU's is always a painful topic around here. But we have often discussed the need for the light action tops with a 6 and 7 mm ring. We are selling them to some OEM's already. I think you will see these added shortly. Some of the Bass guys are also asking for them so there is a need there we have to address. Without prolonged foot dragging I think you'll see them some time this spring.

Warmest regards, Joe Meehan, ATC
