I want to build a salt water 7 weight fly rod. I have an extra St. Croix SCV blank rated a 6 weight. I've heard that the SCV blanks fish (and CC) similar to one weight higher than St. Croix rates them. I'm thinking of using a Struble U-15 reel seat with 1" fighting butt, or similar anodized aluminum reel seat. Anyone know if it would be fairly similar building on this blank as a salt water fly rod (with anodized aluminum reel seat), and fishing it with a 7 weight line? Re: SCV blanks

At what distance? That's the key to any of the fly rod equations. Any St. Croix 6 wt rod will easily fish a #7 line, but not if you want to cast very far. I have an 8'6" 6 wt Croix that fishes great with a #6 at from maybe 30 to 60 feet or more. With a #7 I'd probably have to stay in closer than that.
If you want to fish at longer distances which most saltwater guys do, I'd stick with the Croix 7 wt blank. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
