This sort of depends on the diameter(s) of the rods and the grips. The one I have has 4 holes, only three of which I use:
1/2" ; 3/4" 5/8" and one full inch. I've never used the 1" diameter and the 5/8" gets very little use. Try to make the one that
you'll use the most in the center of the board. The one I made I used a 3" wide x 12" piece of 'hard maple' that I got from the
Home Depot back in the trim area. I'd also recommend that you smooth out the top edges with a round-over bit and then sand
it well - and put a couple of coats of spar varnish on it. Just makes for a nicer tool.
