Blueing Stainless Guides

Has anyone tried this. I was considering giving it a shot since I have some blueing compound laying around.

It's been over 30 years since I blued any metal so I maybe all wrong here but don't it have to be raw steel to be blued? I don't think stainless will accept the bluing agent. But it does sound interesting and would give it an almost halo look if it could be done. If you have a extra guide give it a go. If it works let us know and post a photo.

I have some old tear off guides to experiment with and I was hoping for the "halo" effect you mentioned. Now if I can only figure out my friends formulations he uses for hand made black powder guns. He has come up with a plum finish and one that is a really neat brown tone.

Who knows?

You might check with Brownell's. They are probably the largest gunsmith supply house in the country. They have a website [www.brownells.com]

They handle many formulations of metal coloring agents, and I would bet customer service could give you the skinny on it.

I'm with Putter though, my guess would be that normal blueing agents won't penetrate stainless...

Good Luck, they do have parkerizing and teflon coatings - salt water components??? ice fishing??? makes me start to think....

Derek, bluing is an oxidizer. It actually causes steel to oxidize (rust). I don't think it will work very well with stainless, unless it was very very low in nickle content, then you might be able to change the color somewhat, but I doubt it.
