I have refinished a number of rods with Perma Gloss using different methods, a brush, my finger, and a coffee filter. The rods didn't look too bad but I just wasn't satified with the outcome. The one that I just finished I painted metalic green and put 3 coats of finish on it. two coats with my finger which I wasn't happy with. Then I went over the blank with scotchbrite to take out some of the bumps and then did the final coat with a brush. How many coats does everyone else use and what is the best method to apply the finish to get a smooth even coat?

See below where Pete mentions using the foam brush. It gives a perfect, factory type finish.

Tom, I still like your old way of using the cheese cloth. Tried the sponge and got a lot all over my fingers. Re: Perma Gloss on rod blank?

Tim:
The best method obviously is to use a method that allows the best finish from the start -- a sponge, a really good brush, spray (use an air brush) or similiar will get the best results. I used spar urathane nut would likely use the perma-gloss the next time. I also use automotive refinishing techniques to further smooth out the finish after the finish dries. Refer to a post I posted quite some time ago. [www.rodbuilding.org] Use 400-600 grit paper and wet sand. Then use a high quality rubbing compound and then a glazing compound. Will take out any blemishes you may have. All can be found at specialty automotive refinishing shops. Good luck. You can email me should you have any questions. Mark Re: Perma Gloss on rod blank?

I've tried about every type of paint/finish I've been able to get my hands on and have found the automotive finishes to give the best finish by far. It may take a little more work, but going at it as if you were painting an automobile (as Mark stated above) applying lite coats, wet sanding, rubbing compound, glazing compound and after the wraps and finish are done, A quality wax system applied such as Meguiar's.
It's more work, but they come out looking like a show car finish. Regards......Doug@ TCRds Re: Perma Gloss on rod blank?

The one I tried from Valspar was good. The only thing was it had a set up time like Permagloss. It set as you would wipe it on. Too fast for me. I like a little time to play, get lint, or dirt out if I got some in. Heck at least 20 minutes before setting up. [www.autopaintdirect.com] Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
