How many coats of finish are normaly needed for a saltwater spinning rod. I have one coat already applied on the underwrap. Will one coat for the overwraping of the guides suffice? Re: finish

I would put at least two coats on. And make sure the threads are fully covered. Have it go over onto the blank just a little to keep saltwater out from under the thread. make sure that hole is filled around the post Re: finish

I agree with Bill. Count on several coats on your overwraps. Every time I have tried to do one coat on anything (usually because I am impatient and want to hurry up and finish the rod) I end up putting on too much finish. This nearly always results with problems that in the long run cause me to havie to spend more time to fix. Thank you! Scott Hunt Re: finish

It all depends on thick those "coats" are. I never use more than one, but I can apply a fairly thick coat if need be. What you don't want to do, is put on so much at one time that you get those nasty lumps and sags. It's probably better to go with two thinner applications rather than one very thick one. At least until you've done more rods and have a better idea of your finish's working properties.

I always takes multiple coats for me on saltwater rods. There always seems to be some thread ridges that just won't go away on top of the guide foot somewhere. Only a time or two have I got one finished with just two coats. Normally it's three or more.
