underwraps on surf rods.....your advice please!

I have in the works an AmTak gloss black surf blank, in which I would like to use NCP white as the underwrap. (My first rod needing underwraps) I have thought about using a base coat of FC, to 'fix' the underwrap in place, but am worried about not being able to finish the overwraps in a reasonable amount of time to have a good 1st coat-2nd coat bond. I will not be able to 'scuff' this thin layer before applying the 2nd coat.

What have you surf rod builders experienced/done in this area?

Option...
If I were to use CP on on the underwraps, I would be concerned with durability...that is, how will the guides/wraps stand to years of use/abuse when their finish isnt bonded directly to the blank?

This is why I chose ncp white....so there would be finish penetration thru the threads....

Please let me know if i'm worrying about the small things.....

Thanks
RB

I've used CP on the underwraps of many 130lb class rods. Dozens and dozens of them over some 25 years. Not one durability problem.

I would suggest you build the wrap without trying to seal the underwrap. Use smaller thread for the underwrap, then take your time on the guide wraps with a C or D thread. With the new lighter "lite" finishes you wil not have any problems with thorough penetration of the thread. I build in this manner with no problem - apply finish to guide wrap/underwrap in ne step, no finishing underwrap 1st.

Thanks....good to know.
I have NCP A white to use for the underwraps.

Next question....
What do you use to hold the guides in place without contaminating the underwrap/lifting fuzzies..etc.?

Thanks again!

I use masking tape to hold down guides while wrapping, and I don't even worry about contamination

If you don't want to use CP on the underwrap, try Permagloss. This will give the bond you're looking for and seal the threads making the guide wraps easier on you. You should be able to wrap A on top of A with no problems after the base wrap is sealed.

I also fix guides to the blank/underwrap with masking tape. Never noticed any fuzzy lifting, but then again you're wrapping over the area where the tape is anyway so any fuzzies are burried under the guide wrap.
