Spiral Wraps

I have been doing a lot of experimenting with spiral wraps recently and am very please with the results I have been getting but I have a continual problem with my tie-offs. This is a continuation of a problem I have had with guide wraps as well. When I look at pictures in Rod Maker or on this site I see examples of many multi colored wraps that that appear to have bands that are only a few threads wide. Can anybody give me a quick lesson on how this is done. I have no problem with bands that are 8 wraps or more but on the small rods I am working on 8 wraps is very wide and not very pleasing to the eye, 3 to 4 wraps look much better.

If you can afford it, get Ken Preston's DVD on Rod Building. It covers this area and also color changes very extensively. It's well worth the price.

Jim, do you have Clemens Advanced Rod Building book? It explains how to do small bands as well as single trim bands. I must admit though, even though the process is simple, it took me reading it a few times before I got the basic idea. From there, you can practice. Others have since manipulated that method to their own liking. It is really hard to explain simply by typing. Once you understand how to do it, you may be able to get more specific answers. Billy 40 was a big help to me, but I didn't understand what he was saying until I tried it a few times and got it down. Then I could try different ways of doing the same thing with slightly different affects.

Jim, I tried to email you but your email is hidden. Are you talking about trim bands or inlay bands?
