When I refinish a blank, I sand or strip the old finish off the blank. What is the best thing to coat the blank with befor I wrap the guides?

For the top coat? Permagloss.

On unsanded blanks that I sand myself, I use a spray on urathane in a satin finish. Looks nice and two good coats seem to hold up pretty well.

I have found permagloss NOT to be a good blank coating. Had to redo a series of rods I had coated with it, they were all flaking after one one season of use in the salt water environment. It was not lack of cleanliness, contamination, or poor prep work - it was the permagloss. Went to a 2-part epoxy paint with no further problems. Do a search of the arhives, its all there....

2-3 coats of Spar Urethane, then let sit for at least 72 hrs. You can get it in Gloss or Satin.

There is a previous thread with some responses in it. I described how I refinshed a 30-40 year old rod. Came out great. No muss / no fuss.

Some people use epoxy to coat there Saltwater rods and say they hold up real well.
I have used permagloss, sets a little too fast, then an auto clear, also set to fast, now I have switched to thined epoxy. Just have to let dry 2-3 plus days before wrapping. A lot less of a pain, and if it works in saltwater

How much do you thin your epoxy? I assume you would use denatured alcohol for the task? Might give that a try.

Read the article here on rod blank refinishing. PermaGloss is proven to be about the top blank coating product. You do have to properly prepare your surfaces no matter what you use though. READ the article.

William, permagloss is good. It is just a little to quick to set. I am starting to wonder about this pealing I am starting to hear about. Never happened to me. In fact it is always ( hard ) to get off a blank, this is good!
Jay About 30%. I mix almost watery texture. You should experiment. I use a Mid Temp Thinner and use Glass Coat. The thinner gives this fast stuff a nice fair set time.I put on 2-3 coats depending how much dust I get, then sand with 600 wet and finial coat. I figure if Ken has rods out and used in saltwater it must take a heck of a lot of abuse
Hate to spend any more on experimenting, but did see a Clear Shield on Minwax's site. Good for out door use and has UV protection? What the hay, it's just money
