Based on a reading posts here about the ins and outs of using cork tape for surf rod handles, specifically the need to replace cork tape after it wears out, I am wondering how quick grip compares. I have never used it or seen it in person, only in a photo. What has your experience been with regards to installation, durability, etc.?

Scott,
I think quick grip is shrink tubing that is very thin. I have used the shrink tubing for grips, but I used cord wraps over the blank and then put on the shrink tube to make a larger grip. I have used quick grip over a damaged grip and it worked for a repair. Larry Tysinger Re: Quick Grip vs. Cork Tape

I have used cork tape for many years on live bait rods and yes it does wear out and needs to be replaced. The advantage is that is produces a lighter weight handle with a greater degree of adjustibility for reel placement. Lately I have been placing X-tube (a brand of shrink tubing) over the cork tape and I like this addition even better. The X-tube cleans easiely of debrees and slime. With the thin wall graphite rods though I have added a PVC bushing directly to the rod blank where the reel clamps to prevent compression damage of the rod blank. I have also found that two to three layers of 1/16 cork tape fits better that one or two layers of 1/8 cork tape and each layer is wrapped in a different direction.
