I want to build a bass (casting rod) rod and would like to build it from individual parts and not a kit. As I am new to building (starting my 3rd rod), I am still learning the specifics for sizing. I would like to build a rod with EVA camo grips and the green guides that are listed in MudHole. I was thinking of using a
AMSJ721 blank (or an equivilant) blank, prefer green blank for this. Could someone help me decide on what guide sizes and quantity that I would need, as well as the reel seat, butt cap etc. Thanks in advance. Dick Murchison Re: bass casting rod

I would also like advise on spacing, though I will test it prior to wrapping as I have learned from the helpful hints in this forum. Re: bass casting rod

Dick,
There are many methods for determining the number and spacing of guides but you will find in the Library section above a method of spacing guides called the static method. In my judgement it is as a method as there is. Re: bass casting rod

Sorry that should read "as good a method as there is". Re: bass casting rod

Thanks Emroy,
Any idea on the guide sizing and handle assembly? Re: bass casting rod

Dick,
I second Emory's suggestion of static placement method, I have used it for my rods and it works great. Personally I used the fuji concept charts as a place to start from with guide number and sizes. I think Anglers Resource has them on their site, if not George Roth www.georgescustomrods.com has a link to the charts on his site under the articles section. Scott Re: bass casting rod

Dick,
I have the SC66MLF at home, it is a great rod for small cranks, dropshot, and a ton of other stuff. I'll check out the guide spacing and sizes I did to mine when i get home and drop you an email with that info. Scott Sheets Re: bass casting rod

Dick,
If you are going to make that rod 6' 6" then it will take about 7 guides and I would start with a tip and first couple of guides that are small, #6s and work up to about #8s. In fact I think for that blank I would look at using the higher frame, light weight guides and maybe go from #6 to #10. I would use the static method to determine the actual number and their positioning though as every blank is a little different. I would probably use one of the blank through reel seats on that rod and as far as the handle is concerned that is pretty much a question of personal choice. There are all sorts of variables and options. The trend in handles for that type of rod has been to handles that are a little longer, 8", 9", even 10". Remember though that as you make the handle longer you are making the working part of the rod, from the reel to the tip, shorter. Re: bass casting rod

Richard of Richard's Rod and Reel would be one person to call and I am pretty sure that he carries that blank. He has been very helpful to me in the past and a great fellow with whom to do business. Re: bass casting rod

Dick, Since this is to be a casting rod I hope you are looking into making it a Roberts wrap(acid wrap). If so this will make some difference in your guide selection. Not in the running guides but in the transition guides. Hope you do yourself a favor and make it Roberts(acid) wrap.
