building a stand-up rod

Hey there anyone. I am trying to find out how guides should be wrapped for stand-up rods. I am planning to under-wrap all guides. Should the guides be overwrapped twice? Thanks

John - Give us a little more info on what type of rod and fish etc. Here in California we think of Stand Up rods as rods that are used to fight giant yellowfin tuna or stand up fishing for billfish. Most frequently that would be a 51/2 ft to 61/2ft rod, ranging from 50# to 130#. Probably 5 aftco roller guides, long foregrips(16"-20"), ARS3M reel seat, gimbals, and you are correct one under and 2 over wraps. However there are other options depending on the fish and area and style of fishing. If you need any other info drop me a line.

Honestly with today's thread and epoxies tripple wrapping isn't a necessity. On my personal rods I triple wrap only the heaviest of rods (80# & up). Even then it's probably not needed. If a customer wants triple wraps I mention to them that it might not be needed, but in the end if they want it I do it. I'm currently doing four rods for a charter boat, and even though they are light sticks in the 20-50# range, I am triple wrapping. This is a case where the rods see lots of use and are commonly abused by the party. The extra wrap is insurance in this extreme case.

Some people feel triple wraps in s/w rods are always needed just like some feel snake guides should be used on all fly rods. It all boils down to what you want...you're the builder.

One underwrap of 00 or A, then one overwrap of D. Now if it's more than a 50lb stand up, I"ll use two overwraps of D.
