Fly rod ferrule wrap

I was looking at my Sage DS2 for comparison sake and noticed that while the ferrule wraps are of normal length (5/16") they appear to have gone a further 2 1/4" with the wrap finish. Does this significantly strengthen the ferrules? These ferrule wraps also don't go right to the end of the ferrule (about 1/8" shy), big deal or not? I hope the fit and finish on my rod ends up better than this!

The wraps needs to be close to the ferrule edge. Adding finish on the rod blank itself would not add any real hoop strength to the area. Custom rod builders generally do a better job than most commercial makers in this and many other regards. You and should set your sights higher than what you see on a commercially made rod.
