Depending on what type of "boat rod" you want to build, turbos may be "over-kill". A heavy-duty bottom rod and some trolling rod blanks may be very similar in many respects. But the bottom stick doesn't get many hot runs. Usually there's no way to stop a big gamefish's first run, and that's when smooth & cool count. I don't know if there is any difference in frame strength between a heavy duty U frame guide and the turbos. I use them because to me they just look better. As far as rings, I know Forecast carries both types of guides in two different materials.
