Date: February 04, 2005 09:37PM @#$%&-o Rod Builders !!! Thought that I might pass this on . Don't know if it had ever been posted before or put put on the photo page, have never seen it. Have been wanting to put togeather a cork crip and a eva grip that I had gotten the materials for at Christmas.I have been holding off cause I thought that I did'nt have any way to clamp them after glueing togeather.Went out to my shop to see what I had that I could use and make due to come up with a clamp . The only thing that was suitable that came close to what I needed was a caulking gun. Thought what the heck I'll give it a try,I went ahead and cut the eva the way I wanted them, glued them up,put them on a piece of 1/2 stainless steel rod that I had.Took the caulking gun put a flat washer with a 1/2 hole in the front part of the gun and put the rod through and applied jut a small amount of pressure for a short time, released it and put it on my Grizzly Hobby lathe and turned it down to the best looking grip I ever seen.I went ahead and done the same with the cork came out ok,but I need more practice on the turning part.I think I only paid $ 1.50 for the gun a Home Depot.don't know why I waited so long.So it worked for me and hope It'll work for somebody else who builds on a shoe string budget. Sorry that I can't post a pic. on the photo page but I don't have the means, maybe some one eles can try it and post a pic. <<<<<<<<<<<DON>>>>>>>>> Hobby Rods Re: Poor Mans Clamp

Donald,
I went out into my garage and tryed a caulking gun and it worked. I think that your idea is really ingenious and I have never seen it suggested before either. I am sure that it will work very well for many people. However, it was it is a little short for much of the cork work that I do. If I can figure out how to extend it about 6 more inches I will be in your debt. Re: Poor Mans Clamp

Fred,
I posted a picture of a clamp that I made. This was not my original idea but a copy of some else's clamp. Do a search in the photos under my name and you will see the blue clamp. You will have to drill a hole through the two sides that compress for your mandrel to fit through. This clamp will accomodate long grips. Cheers, Ellis Mendiola Re: Poor Mans Clamp

Dale Clemen's publication had the caulking gun clamp in it in the '80's, too. It's really neat that you came up with the idea on your own! Neccessity is the mother of invention, that's for sure... Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
