Spiral wrap

When doing a spiral wrap do you put the second guide on a ninty degree angle from the first guide and the the rest of the guides on the bottom axis. Also do you use the same number of guides or can you use less guides. I have never tried to do one and kinda thought it was a gimmick but I think I would like to try one on a seven casting rod. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

No gimmick, it's the real deal. There are a lot of ways to do this and if you do a search in the archives here you can uncover a ton of the different methods. Check the library here as there may be something there too.

Hi Pat,

Here is an example of what a spiral wrap looks like.

The transition guides on this setup is 0, 60, 120 degrees off the reel seat.
The running guides are 180 degrees off the reel seat.
This is a 7ft inshore trolling setup using 8 guides for the total setup.
Hope this helps you to how a spiral wrap setup

What I do is use a tip section from a soft blank, and use it as a guide with it going though the guides. I also use a fly line when I put the rod under pressure. The colored line is just easyer to see.

I also usually look for the streightest line path. Good articals in the back issues of Rodmaker

As some methods described before, I place the tiptop and the next guide on the blank. Center the line on the reel and run it through the tip guides. I then place the guides along it's natural path. Makes sense to me and has worked well. Various lenths and diameters of blanks will require various placement of guides, I let the line tell me where it wants to go. There may be better methods and more scientific, but again, has worked well more me, can't tell any negative effects to date.
