Slide Band reel seat

New to the board and rod building. I hate posting a question on my first post, but my search led me here, so here it is. Building a 3wt rod that I would like to match to a slide band reel seat. Ideally a single band uplocking, but am willing to entertain other options. I've seen the Struble's and others in the $40-50 range, but I'd like something a little less expensive.

I know Cortland and Pac Bay used to make them, but seems they're discontinued. I also read somewhere that some companies taper the inner bore of the band/rings to provide a better hold on the reel foot. Is that true?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

-Jason

Hi Jason,

For a slide band reel seat, I really like the Struble D-2 model. If you stick to the standard / Deluxe model, rather than the nickel silver model, you should be able to find one for $20 or less.

This is a downlock (single slide band) with an end cap that receives the bottom foot of the reel. It has a teak mortised (recessed / routed) insert, & is a really dependable seat. They are available in a chrome/silver color, & black anodized color, plus come in a standard size & a small size (D-2S). Both are small & suitable for light rods, but the D-2S has a smaller bore & the outside diameter may be smaller as well.

I've built 2 light fly rods using the D-2 black reel seats, & they are light, durable, & nice looking IMHO. Think I paid $14 & $15 for the 2 seats a couple of years ago. Anyway, hope this helps.

Tom

deja vu? check two similar posts within the past week. my search has uncovered lower cost slide band fly reel seats from cortland (call them), pac bay (check versitex), even REC and struble. bob from custom tackle was also able to help out. good luck.
