Tying off trim bands ?????

Another newbie question here. I havent been able to buy any how-to books or video's, so I've kinda been flying by the seet of my pants, and what I could learn reading here and on the sponsor's sites. I see all these great looking guide wraps with one to five wrap trim bands. How do you tie them off. I guess what I'm really asking is basicly how their done.

Even though I am new to this too, I think I can help you here from what I learned. The trim wrap is done the same way as wrapping a regular guide. You need to cross over the thread to hold it, make a wrap or two, insert a tie off loop, make a couple of wraps, then put the thread (cut off from spool) in the tie off loop and pull through. This is how I did it. Hope this is helpful. I am sure that someone else here who is an expert can explain it better or correct me.

Hopes this helps,
Dick

Trim bands can be done a couple of different ways , I'm no pro by any means , but I just lay the tie off loop on a 5 wrap band on the first wrap . You can also learn the nail knot method , or tie in the trim thread into the main wrap when you start it . I'm sure you will hear other methods . Good luck....... JD

William
There is a real good artical on how to do narrow trim bands and
thread inlays in Rod Maker magazine Vol. 6- Issue # 1. So just go
To the left of your screen and order you a back issue, and while
you are there go ahead and treat yourself to a year subcription.
It's a great tool to the craft.Being a newbie you can pick up alot
of information.<<<<Don>>>>

Some of you fellows may not have read my "Cry for Help" post. I am disabled (SSD on the appeal stage) and cannot work. Therefore I have no income, to be able to purchase back issues of RodMaker, or that is exactly what I would do. I am awaiting my small income tax return from the first half of last year, Out of which I hope to subscribe. Going over the contents of the back issues, I see the wealth of information that I don't have access to. As soon as Uncle Sam approves my SSD, I plan on buying back issues a few at a time. If some kind soul out there is getting out of rodbuilding (heaven forbid) and wants to send them to somewhere that they'll get used, email me. I'll even get my Mom to pay the shipping for them. I again want to thank all you guy's who have sent me stuff. You will be rewarded, if not here, then in the hereafter.

Donald,

If you have that issue and the ability, would you scan that article and email it to me.

Thanks again all,

Bill in WV

Will, I tie in the trim thread before I start the main wrap. The end is firmly anchored, and once the wrap is complete you can do the trim as easy as pie. The only thing not going for this method is that if you don't use CP, metallic underneath the thread shows through once epoxied, and under close inspection one can see a "bleed" colour mix at that spot when normal thread is used.

I'm copying this from what I posted last fall. Works great for trim bands of 3 turns and up:

I've homed in on a really good method for trim wraps where you tape down the pull-through loop on the blank first, wrap the trim band over that, pull through (works fine for 3 to 6 turns, or more if you want, I don't), now you have tag ends on both sides of the trim. Pull them carefully until they come together, you can then apply tension, as much as you want, at 180 degrees from each other, 45 degrees relative to the blank at both sides (these angles are important), you now have a nice and snug trim band that you can move with your thumbnail into place, tugging at the tag ends whenever necessary to keep it together. Just before you snug it up against the main wrap, cut off the tag end flush at that side (I use an Exacto blade, change blades often). Then cut the other tag end, leaving a bit a bit sticking out (scissors or nail clip), cut it snug just before you epoxy (Exacto).

Never fails for me now, almost never anyway. This was described on the board more than a year ago, don't know how to direct you to it. Hope this is clear. There are other subtle points in doing this that you will pick up as you go along.

just to add to what tom said i sometimes place a very small drop of super glue on the area where the tag is before i trim them. these tiny wraps are easy to undo by accident. only do this if you are not using cp since the super glue will make that part of the thread go transparent. if you are using cp use a tiny drop of cp the same way. save you some grief.
