I have a Dayton motor on my lathe, its a Clemens lathe but that doesnt matter.
A couple of weeks ago the motor decided to fry on me so I went to Grainger and purchased the same motor to replace it. Well no matter where I place my belt on the pulleys the motor is heating up. I have never noticed this before. I tried two different pedals thinking that might be the issue but thats not the problem.

Any ideas?

Without the belt on, does the lathe chuck spin feely? That would be the place I would look first. There may be something in the mechanism that's creating excess friction.

Russ , have you checked the amount of current being delivered to the outlet. Sounds like you may have a loose ground at the service outlet or in the breaker box. This would allow the motor to run but with a simulated load due to low voltage. Most 110 outlet s will vary from 105 to 120 volts, and some electrical units will not tolerate low voltage. Example, arc welder, household fans, hair dryers. Get a voltage tester from a harbor freight store, or hardware store to check it or use a outlet on a different breaker. Also if you are using an extension cord that also could be a problem. Just a little farmer advise. Good luck.

Russ, take teh belt off and run it with no restriction, see if it gets hot. It shouldn't, its a brand new motor. As stated above, check the head stock to see if its spinning freely. Last resort, the tension on the belt may be too tight

I've had my Clemens lathe for 12 years, turned lots of cork with the lightweight 1/15 HP original motor, even if everyone says to upgrade to 1/10. I like the twin shafts, sorry to hear yours is fried, and replacement running hot. Above advice is good, but first I would call Grainger and see what they say. They also sell kits for rebuilding your old motor. Check their web-site and find Grainger outlet near you, should be one. Price on dual shaft Dayton approx. $46.00. Good Luck !!

Billy I didnt pay $90!! It was $40!!!
Motor runs cool as a ice without the belt attached!!
I forgot how free the rod chuck was when it was new ???? DUH!!! It seems free But I know something isnt kosher because while you could always stop the rod from turning with some resistance it doesnt take as much to stop it now!!!

Will check voltage but have other things on the same strip that arent having any trouble like my
Cork lathe which is a Grizzly hobby lathe /1/2 drill........
