Renzetti Lathe

Most all of the lathes I've seen in shops and vidios have the head stock on the left with the rotation of the lathe away from the person. With the Renzetti, the rod turn towards the person, or counter clockwise. This makes it difficult (for me) to apply finish, because you can not lay the brush on the top of the rod as it turns.

How do you Renzetti guys do it? Apply the finish from the bottom? ?????

Most lathes turn towards the user over the top, not away. This is the only way you can do any actual turning as the stock must rotate into the cutting tools.

I do not apply finish under power. I know only a few who do. Most of us just turn the rod by hand in whatever direction is needed or whatever direction we feel most comfortable with.

Bill,

I have a Renzetti and at the time they sold a motor that had a foot pedal with a switch that would reverse the motor. Renzetti had problems with that motor and stopped selling that set up. Mine still works and I can reverse at any time. There are some geared motors (Dayton) that can be wired to reverse if that is what you want.

The easy way to reverse the way the rod turns is to figure eight (cross) the belt between the motor and the headstock pulley. You may need to buy a little longer belt.

If you must have your lathe run the other way why not turn the entire unit around and attach the rod holders from the other side?

David,I believe that would put the thread carriage on the wrong side of the rod.

You must be careful when you reverse the direction of a lathe with a chuck that threads on. It could unthread and fly off!!!!

When I suggested turning the lathe around I meant to add that you would then have to reverse all hte attachments as well. I have done it on my Clemens in order to reach an outlet without having to use an extension cord. I have subsequently repositioned my work station to enable the lathe to turn towards me from the top which is the certainly the preferred way.
