Color Preserver needed?

Is there value in using color preserver if you have no need to preserve color? Like if you using black thread on a black blank or could care less about the transparency? The reason I am asking as my rod building book (I am half way through my first fly rod) strongly suggests CP for its attribules not related to preserving color. I would appreciate any opinions on this as well as any pros and cons of using CP. Thanks. Great web site.

No, you don't need it for anything else. I'm really not aware of any other attributes other than that it penetrates better than epoxy, but even epoxy will reach the blank unless it's so hot that it sets before it has time to pass down to the blank.

Do a search for CP or color preserver and you will find more opinions than you want. The only positive attribute I can think of for using CP (other than to preserve color or to prevent transparency) would be to prevent threads moving on a decorative crosswrap or weave.

If you don't care about the color or translucense, I wouldn't bother. It's personal preference!!
