Rod building epoxy vs. regular epoxy

I was gluing up the hardware on two reel seats last night, and went to use the Flex Coat rod building epoxy I have... and the "red" bottle was jelled up.

So I used 2 hour Devcon (I think that's the brand... bought at walmart). instead... but no I'm having a little anxiety that it won't hold.

Is there any reason why I can't just use regular store bought epoxy versus Rod building epoxy? I'm planning on also fixing the cork handle and reel seats with this epoxy, unless anyone can tell me why I shouldn't.

I do have an order of guides/handle/reel seat for another rod I want to get next month... so I will probalby pick up some more rod building epoxy.

Rod Building Epoxy is a brand name, nothing more. It's just slow cure, liquid, type two-part epoxy, similar to the Devcon that you bought at the mart. While there may be minute differences, the overall product type is the same and will work just fine for rod building tasks.

You can return your "jelled up" epoxy resin to normal by heating the bottle in a pan of very hot water. Or, remove the cap and zap the stuff in the microwave oven in 10 second bursts until it clears and liquifies again. At that point you can consider it good as new.

Tom is sure right about the microwave; I'd suggest trying Rod Bond if you're going to order more adhesive. This stuff is a joy to work with!

The only problem I ever had with the Devcon type 5 minute epoxy was when I heated an EVA grip prior to installation. What I learned the hard way (because I didn't do my homework on this board first!) was that the heated grip accelerated the curing of the 5 minute epoxy. I gave up on trying to get the butt section all the way down about a 1/2 inch from the end and had to trim it w/ my dremmel. I was sweating bullets when the grip started to seize about 5 inches from the end and about had a coronary trying to get it into position. After that little episode I have strictly used Rod Bond for all my reel seats and grips, works like a dream!

All of the rods that I had previously used the Devcon on that I didn't sell and kept for demo's and my own personal use are holding up great so I do not doubt it's abilities, only it's ease of use.

In my opinion, you will get a lot more bang for your buck with RodBond. If you're not opposed to trying it out, buy the small set of Rod Bond and try it out, if you just absolutely hate it, send me an email and I'll buy it off you.

Hey Putter don't rain on my parade!

I just remembered how reluctant I was to try out the rod bond until I had my little "Oh Crap" moment with that EVA grip. I didn't want to "waste" money on the unknown and then of course there was always the fact I didn't want to admit I'd blown way more money buying enough $3 Devcon kits to have bought a 5 gallon bucket of each RodBond goop!

Live and learn!

Hey Putter - got any RodBond for sale?
