Tis the dumb beginer again. I am having trouble locating the proper or dominate spine on a Allstar 6'6" casting blank. I am getting 2 sometimes 3 different spines. What do I need to do to pick the correct one. I am holding tie tip of the blank in my hand, the butt is on a tale top and I apply pressure as close as I can to 1/3 of the distance down toward the butt end of the blank. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: 2 - 3 Spines???

When I do this by hand, I apply pressure pretty much in the middle. I often get what feels like 2 spines, but after fiddling with the section for a while, one of them will feel "stiffer" than the other. Make sure the table top is very flat and smooth and you don't actually hold the tip of the section, it should rest against the palm of your hand while you apply pressure with the other hand and roll the section with the hand that's applying the pressure.
If you really get frustrated by it, you can just ignore the whole thing and build the rod to be as straight as possible, that's what most companies do. Good luck Re: 2 - 3 Spines???

Put the blank butt on a very smooth, hard surface floor, with the blank standing straight up. Or better yet, on a glass marble. Now put the palm of your hand on the tip (or better yet, put a glass shot cup over the tip) and press straight down and allow the blank to turn freely. Make a mark on the outside of the bend that forms. Now do it again, and again. If the same bend comes up each time you've located the effective spine. If you tend to get a different bend, keep doing it and finalize on the one that comes up the most out of 10 tries. That will be your effective spine.

Tom and I were obviously typing at the same time. His advice and method sounds a lot more efficient and practical. I plan to try his method today. Re: 2 - 3 Spines???

Remember that the spine is not "stiff" - it is the axis where you have the least resistance; where the blank naturally goes when you allow it to spin freely under pressure.
