Coloring Epoxy

I know that the guys who have been marble-izing have found some great pigments for their epoxy. I'm looking for a cheap, easy way to make my epoxy black.

Any thoughts?

In the Testor's black, there is enamel and acrylic. I'd use the enamel and pour off the solvent and just use the pigment. It'll be sharper, brighter than any other way.

Is there a good online vendor that sells Testors model paint? Thanks, Jay

target, wal-mart, any hobby store will carry them. They are the little glass jars of paint that we used to paint model cars with until we became more sophisticated and graduated to rod building, LOL.

Andrew. You didn't say what you wanted it for, but Klass Kote makes an epoxy paint in a variety of colors. I use the clear for guide wraps.

All right how about this. Has anyone seen the rods made by Ian Miller? If you have, you've likely noticed that the guide wraps look to be black, but not in the normal fasion we're used to seeing. They look somewhat dull in color. They also seem to carry the color all the way to the top of the epoxy unlike what I normally see where the epoxy is obviously coated above the wraps. Its like the epoxy was colored black, but a dull black. What would be the best way to get this 'matte' type of shading of epoxy. You guys are great. Thanks again. Jay

Possibly, a flat black, but I think the finish will still give it some shine.

I am sure the Klass Kote (sponsor) epoxy paint will do exactly what you want to do. It applies like a varnish. The only reason I have not tried it is that I like the appearance of K-K clear over black thread, it looks deeper. I am also concerned that the black epoxy paint will climb the guide foot.

Check out Tap Plastics. They carry tints that are thick and will last a long while

I have used the pigment sold for fiberglass resin with good success. It is kind of a paste.
