Fly Rod Stripping Guide
Posted by: Anonymous User (---.client.comcast.net)

After looking at my Forecast 864-3 blank for nearly 2 weeks now, the guides that I ordered finally showed up tonight. They took so long because a few of the things I ordered were on back order.

My question is where should I place my stripping guide. Since this is a 3 piece rod I'm a little confused about where to put it. On my four piece rods there are no guides on the butt sections and the stripper guide is anywhere from 2-6 inches from the start of the second section. Unfortunately I have no 3 piece rods to look at.

Using the "grab the rod as if you were stripping in line and put your stripping guide there" rule of thumb the stripping guide is on the butt section and about 3 inches from the ferrule. So I'm wondering what most people do with 3 piece blanks. Should I move the stripping guide forward those extra 3 inches and stick it right at the ferrule, or just leave it as is?

I appreciate any help.

Mark

Your rule of thumb works well. (within 2")
If you email me and give me the length of the rod, I'll give you the layout from the tip top down.

Not an expert here but I had always heard the rule of thumb was in the 30" - 32" range for the butt end. That puts the stripping guide on my 9'6" 3 piece rod on the butt section and then on the center section of my little 3 piece 7 footer.

Mark,

Try this

Guide Spacing 4 1/2 10 3/4 17 1/4 25 5/8 34 42 3/8 51 1/4 60 1/2 71

This is spacing for 8'6 7-9 wgt 3 piece rod. This will get you in the ball park and you can adjust with a static test

REC Components at the left have guide spacing charts that are very helpful. They have gotten me close many times.

Thanks everybody, this should be enough to get me started. I think I'll probably keep the stripping guide on the butt section.

Mark. On a three piece rod, I always place the first guide goes on the ferrule of the middle section. You might put a tamer on the ferrule (the stripper 4 inches below) if you feel the stripper can't go on the ferrule.
