Ring Guide Durability-Heavy Tackle

I'm thinking about spiral wrapping some heavy stand-up rods for 130# tackle. Plans are to use LRSGs. Can rings handle really heavy drag preasures? I'm talking 45-60# of drag...seriously. Would it be a good idea to use RSGs for the transition guides? I've never wrapped ring guides for this type of heavy application and would appreciate opinions of the SiC's durability. Thanks. Jay

Rings can easily handle that kind of pressure, however the LRSG's have very short feet and were not designed for use much above 50lb class outfits. I think you're pushing things there. The RSG's, if you can find any, could handle it, but I wouldn't risk the LRSG modles on a 130lb outfit.

I've used single foot LBSGs acids wrapped. The rod fishes 80# line, 27# at strike and 35# at full drag. No problems. I've also built a 100# class rod with these guides but haven't fished it yet. I don't expect any problems. If you use the stainless steel version (LBSGK) that Angler Resources has started importing . Check them out at [www.anglersresource.net] If you don't feel comfortable using single foot guides then use HNSGs. All of these guides have SIC rings so they will stand up to just about anything.

I don't know of any other models of ring guides that look any better. I guess if I can't get RSGs, then these rods are out of the question. I have some deciding to do here. Thoughts were to wrap spirally, but I may be relegated to wrapping them with AFTCO BF rollers. Thanks for the input...it is appreciated. Jay

If you wrap them in spiral fashion, then the LRSG's may work fine as they will no longer have anywhere near as stress on them. The tendency for the short feet to pop and twist under the wrap will be eliminated. If you use transition guides you may have to employ something like the USG which sit lower and closer to the blank, then run LRSG's the rest of the way out.
