Single Foot Concerns!?!?

Hey All,
I am about to start building a 9wt Horizon for Salt Water and I was chatting with the rod maufacturer. He mentioned that the only con for single foot guides is that they could slip out of the wrap under a lot of strain!?!?

Has this ever happened to anyone? I was going to go with the new Fuji Single Foot Titanium guides. Don't want to spend the money if they will pop out on me!

Thanks, Tom

Just make sure you use a locking wrap on them. Good article in the library here on the procedure. Ever since using this, I have not had a guide pop out at all.

He must not be up to date with modern security wraps. Well, they're not ever all that modern - I've been using them since 1977 and in all that time have yet to have a single foot guide come out of the wrap.

I used to just put about 5-8 wraps after the upright post. Guides would not come out with this. Now I just put the forham wrap on just as easy and more secure

Never had one come out. I don't use the security wrap. I do put 3 or 4 wraps in front of the foot. I don't use CP. I generally use flex-coat lite for the first coat to be sure to get the tunnel full through the threads. I have had to remove some of these guides. Not really worried about one "popping out" any more after that. I don't get to use my rods enough or with heavy enough fish for a real test though.

I have always used single foots without any kind of security wrap on all my fly rods including those used for salmon with heavy lines and have never had problems with the guides pulling out.
Infact, I dont see how this could possibly happen either in playing a fish or in routine casting.
IMO, about the only way to dislodge SF guides (without a security wrap) is via abuse ---- giving them a sharp blow in the direction of the tip.

Can you still adjust guides after they have been wrapped using a security wrap?

Yes Gary, to some degree.

I always start to wrap from the tip to the butt. As each guide gets wraped, I then adjust. This way if I wrap to tight and no way can adjust a guide, I only have to take " one " guide off and rewrap
Keep checking each guide as you wrap for adjustment
