When applying a metal butt cap to a fly rod reel seat, I have either used U40 or 5 minute epoxy. Is there any preparation necessary for a good bond? Re: Reel seat butt cap

Don, scuff both parts with Scotch brite , or fine grit sand paper to get a rough surface. I use Rod Bond. Have fun , John Got Fish ? Re: Reel seat butt cap

You don't want a rough surface but you do want to degloss it or obtain what they call a 'water break free' surface. These surfaces will be smooth, not rough and will not repel your epoxy. Re: Reel seat butt cap

Don't use 5 minute epoxy. It is only good for tip tops. For butt caps and ferrules I use golf club makers shafting epoxy. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
