Wrapping/Drying Motor

I am just getting started in rod building and have built a jig for wrapping and drying. Is there a motor that I can mount to my jig which could be used for both processes. The books and articles I have read really don't address this issue

I bought a microwave turntable motor for about $8 or $9 at an appliance parts store ... it turns at about 8 rpm and works great. Had to make a "chuck" for it, but it should be easy for anyone who is a little handy.

Hi David,

I just picked up a motor on @#$%& for 15 bucks including shipping. I didn't know exactly what I was looking for, so I just looked up rod building stuff on @#$%& and this one came up. After I got the motor I was looking for a data sheet on the motor so I could build a variable speed circuit for it and found a place that sells them for 4 bucks.

I had built a maual wrapper and also wanted to use it as a dryer. The jig I built has "V" notchs which the dryer motors from Cabelas and others fit into. Look at Rodmaker magazine volume 7 Issue 5 pages 22 & 23 to see the plans. I took a piece of sheet metal and bent it into a "C" shape so it would slide down over the uprights. Then I mounted the drying motor to the "C" shaped metal. So the motor with the metal "C" section will slid down over the upright with the motor fitting in the notch and the "C" metal will hold it in place. When not in use just slide it out and you are ready to wrap rods. Works good for me guess their was not room in article to show that addition to the wrapper. Hope that this helps. I had made a chuck from a plastic pipe cap with three thumbscrews to hold the rods when that I apply the finish. I had the motor and the cost of the material to build the chuck was under $5.00. It works for me. Hope it can give you so ideas.

Good Luck
